APRIL 4: NEW LOCATION FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL CHROMEBOOK PICK-UP

    Dear Simi Valley Schools Community:

We want to thank our high school families for helping to make this past week’s Chromebook distribution a great success! Because of your thoughtful consideration, we were able to provide Chromebook for those high school students who had the greatest need. We will have Chromebooks available for any students wishing to borrow one in the coming weeks, and we appreciate your patience as we steadily go through the process of converting and reprogramming the Chromebooks for off-campus use.

This coming week, our middle school students (8th, 7th, and some 6th graders) will have the opportunity to borrow a Chromebook to use for their Distance Learning needs at home. Next week, we will distribute to our elementary students. Our Chromebooks are all sanitized, and we are using Safe Distancing measures for our drive-through distribution.

Here is what you need to know:

    • YOU MUST HAVE INTERNET ACCESS AT HOME TO BORROW A CHROMEBOOK. We are not able to provide internet/Wi-Fi access to our families. If you cannot access the internet from home, please speak to your teacher(s) about alternative ways to receive instruction (printed packets, etc…).
    • WE HAVE A LIMITED NUMBER OF CHROMEBOOKS AVAILABLE TO LOAN OUT RIGHT NOW. If your child has access to the internet in your home through some other means (smart phone, tablet, laptop computer, desktop computer, etc…) please do not borrow a Chromebook yet. We will have Chromebooks available for every student wanting one in the coming weeks, but we need to fill the most pressing needs first.
    • STUDENTS DO NOT NEED A CHROMEBOOK TO COMPLETE THEIR DISTANCE LEARNING WORK. Again, all a student needs to complete his/her lessons online is access to the internet from home.
    • 6TH GRADERS ATTENDING MIDDLE SCHOOL QUALIFY FOR THIS WEEK’S CHROMEBOOK DISTRIBUTION. 6TH GRADERS ATTENDING ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS MUST WAIT UNTIL NEXT WEEK’S DISTRIBUTION. The Chromebooks are programmed differently for the middle schools and the elementary schools. Please only pick-up this week if you’re a 6th grader at Hillside, Sinaloa or Valley View Middle Schools. 7th and 8th graders are also able to get their Chromebooks this week.
    • THE LOCATION OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOL CHROMEBOOK PICK-UP SITES HAVE CHANGED!! Drive-through pick-up will be held at Royal High School AND Simi Valley High School on Wednesday, April 8 and Thursday April 9 from 1 to 4 p.m. on both days and at both sites. (Due to safe distancing guidelines, we strongly discourage walk-ups, but those who have no other option will still be able to pick-up a Chromebook.)
    • Because we have a limited number of Chromebooks available right now, we could potentially run out of Chromebooks to distribute on a given day and location. Over the next few weeks, as more Chromebooks are prepared for distribution, we will schedule additional days for pick-up. This is why we’re again asking that those students who most need to have a Chromebook to access their Distance Learning classwork participate in these initial pick-up dates.

For our elementary school Chromebook pick-ups, the information is as follows:

    • Drive-through pick-up on Tuesday, April 14 and Wednesday, April 15 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Royal High School AND Simi Valley High School.
    • 6TH GRADERS ATTENDING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL QUALIFY FOR THE APRIL 14 & 15 CHROMEBOOK DISTRIBUTION. The Chromebooks are programmed differently for the middle schools and the elementary schools. Please only pick-up this week if you’re a 6th grader at any of our elementary schools or Monte Vista School. Of course, if your student is in grades JK/TK, Kindergarten, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, they also may borrow a Chromebook if they have no other option for accessing the internet at home.

Lastly, the SVUSD has a Help Desk for technology problems that may arise with the Chromebooks. The phone number is (805) 306-4500, Extension 4811. The email address is  helpdesk@simivalleyusd.org. We will also provide resources and instructions for setting up and using the Chromebooks at the pick-up locations.

Thank you for your patience and flexibility during these challenging days. We look forward to having our students learning with us again.

Of course, if your student is in grades JK/TK, Kindergarten, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, they also may borrow a Chromebook if they have no other option for accessing the internet at home.
